...When I died
Living her life through the Civil War inspired many of her poems, and especially those on death. " I Heard a Fly Buzz - When I Died" was originally untitled, and depicts a person passing from life to death.

The person stumbles across this divide with no symbolic imagery, Just a fly in the stillness of their room breaking the sovereign peace, waiting for it's meal. The fly, in this poem, and throughout the world and history, symbolized death and illness from Mesopotamia to North America.
